Teddington to welcome the Olympics

NewsAfter the Olympic Torch has left Bushy Park and passed Teddington on the Thames on Friday 27th July (8:20am latest estimated time for traversing the Lock), there are plenty of Olympic celebrations taking place in the town.

On this Friday 27th, St Mary With St Alban Church organisers are hosting a mammoth community event to herald the start of the Olympics – from 4-10pm at Udney Hall Gardens. Admission is free and there are almost as many activities as the Olympic Games themselves! Events will be suitable for adults as well as children.

There will be fun races to take part in, torch relay, hot food, drinks bar, kids crafts, opening Glee dance show, tug of war, ‘dry’ water polo, bouncy castle, Pimms tent and a medal awards ceremony to wrap up the competitive events just before a screening of the Olympics opening ceremony inside at the Parish Hall. See poster for full list of events.

During the same weekend, the Teddington Business Community are showcasing health and fitness events to coincide with the London 2012 Olympics.

On Sunday 29th after the Women’s leg of the London to Surrey Cycle Classic Road Race has passed through Teddington, the crowds of local residents and visitors to the area will be able to join in the fitness and fun by taking part in Teddington Active.

From 2–5:30pm five Olympic-inspired zones will showcase the health and fitness talent in the area – the Fitness Zone, Dance Zone, Relaxation Zone, Kids Zone and Heritage Games Zone, five zones to match the five Olympic rings.

Zone venues will be indoor and outdoor, in car parks, church halls and social clubs. Demonstrations and mini classes will be available in the Zones for adults and for children for every level of fitness – talk to the professionals, join in fitness demonstrations, classes and therapies. Pre-booking is recommended for all events – see booking form and poster and TBC Facebook event page for details – sessions are generally every half an hour and each one costs £2.50.

The TBC are asking for volunteers that are required from 1-4pm on the Sunday to hand out event flyers and direct visitors to the zone areas.

There are plenty of other events happening as part of this Olympic celebration – Happy Potter Ceramics will be open for pottery and t-shirt decorating, Play Inside Out will be open for Snakes and Ladders, Marbles, Pin the Tail and more.

Synchronicity will be open for Power Plate demonstrations and Fitness First will be hosting free trials, circuits and cycling. The Kings Head have a live band playing on their terrace from 3pm.

It will have been difficult to not have noticed the flags from all around the world on the High Street – these have been raised to represent the competing countries visiting London for the Olympics. There will be a flag quiz with prizes supplied from shops so start learning your flags now!

Teddington is also welcoming Olympians themselves – St Mary’s University College will be the pre-training camp for the Irish, Chinese and South African teams (South African in particular staying at the Lensbury). Many world-class runners have also been arriving in Teddington over the last week or so and will be training and staying here during the games, particular those managed by Pace Sports management. Next time you are in Bushy Park there’s every chance you will be passed by a blur of Olympic athletes!
