Council reminds dog walkers to use leads following swan attack

A warning has been issued to dog owners after a brutal attack on a swan in Barnes.

Yesterday, two bull terriers who were not on leads, attacked one of the female swans at Barnes Common.

The wounded swan was spotted near Barnes Pond on Monday afternoon.

The bird was taken in by the Swan Sanctuary to be checked over. Fortunately she was not badly injured but was very shaken by the incident.

Richmond Council has now called on dog owners to take more care if walking near the pond or in the presence of wildlife.

Ishbel Murray, Assistant Director for Contracts and Leisure for Richmond Council, said:

“This is clearly quite a distressing incident. Barnes Common has a long history of swans on the pond and this particular swan has also just had cygnets.

“There is signage in the area reminding dog owners to be responsible and to keep them on leads.

“We do not know who the owner of these two dogs is. We warmly welcome responsible dog owners to our parks and open spaces but we do also urge all dog walkers to be vigilant and sensible when walking their dogs. We ask that they are aware of and respect other parks users and wildlife by keeping their dogs under close supervision and control.”
