High Street Update

After announcing poor yearly results, The Teddington branch of Morrisons has been earmarked as one of 23 nationwide that might be closing due to poor performance. This isn’t certain but a poster on the store noticeboard has indicated that closure is under consideration.

Kitchen Sync will close on Saturday the 21st of March and there are still bargains to be had in their closing down sale including ex-display items and shop furniture.

Moving in to this space will be Gardenia of London who currently operate in Wimbledon, Surbiton and Wandsworth and offer “beautiful, seasonal, fresh flowers selected with knowledge, passion and creativity and brought to our customers with care”. The planned launch date is the end of April.

Owner Jamie Grant believes that Gardenia’s ethos and values are a perfect fit with the town’s passion for local high street shopping: “Gardenia has always been a family business. My dad opened his first flower stall on Fulham Road in 1992 and we have grown from there. I’ve been longing to join the wonderful array of independent retailers in Teddington for a good few years and finally we have the opportunity!

The space left empty after Escape closed is rumoured to become a charity shop – more on this soon.

There is no news or new signage applications from Sainsbury’s after they won their court decision for planning permission to move in to the High Street, but Calligaris have recently installed a kitchen design studio so it appears as though no change of ownership will happen soon.

Along with new flats being created in The Causeway, the ex-Bottoms Up space will soon have tenants moving in. No word yet on who and when but the space is being gutted and re-fitted in advance of a new shop owner.
[Update 23/03/2015] One of the site builders has mentioned the space is being divided into three smaller unites.

The space left when Bombay Spice closed at the top of Park Road is currently also undergoing a major refurbishment and will return also as a restaurant promising something new for local food lovers. Watch this space for more info! Cafe Cafe on Broad Street is currently undergoing a complete refurbishment and will re-open soon.

It’s definitely the season for spring make-overs, Echo Barbers on Church Road has renamed to the more apt Dapper. This is a gentlemen’s Hairdresser, a stylish and welcoming friendly place to take the time, have a coffee and a chat with your local barber. As well as quality haircuts, you can also get a proper cut throat shave with hot towels here.

La Bottega has re-opened after a recent refurbishment complete with eye-catching chandeliers! More lunch offerings such as lasagne, roast pork, fresh pasta and other dishes (changing frequently) have appeared as well evening dining starting soon, see windows for updates and ask at the counter to reserve a table.

  • Thank you for all this news; keep up the good work!

I always wondered if Morrisons could survive there, so near Tesco.

But Gardenia sounds a particularly good addition. It’s always particularly good when a completely new type of enterprise opens up, rather than just another cafe etc.
