Hundreds of volunteers were on site early today (Sunday) to put the finishing touches to the building of stalls and marquees for a revived Chestnut Sunday in Bushy Park which even featured a display of historic military vehicles.

The main attraction is close to the children’s playground and the Diana Fountain but the park is closed to cars from 12.30pm until 4.30pm allowing access only by foot or cycle.

Those represented and exhibiting including the Teddington Society, The Friends of Bushy and Home Parks, The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) the Hampton and Bushy Beekeepers, Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare and a special exhibition of the history of the park’s vital role as Camp Griffiss in the Second World War.

There are also mobile outlets for ice cream, coffee and toasties and plenty of portable loos on site too. The revival of Chestnut Sunday has been organised with the Royal Parks and the Friends of Bushy and Home Parks.

The military vehicles and their owners – many of them wearing historic uniforms to highlight the era the vehicles were in use – were provided by the Military Vehicle Trust (MVT) of Heathrow and London and included the Ferret Scout vehicle.

At 11am the temperature in the Park was 21 degrees and sunshine was forecast for the rest of the day. Visitors are reminded to keep their dogs on leads if they are visiting the park because of the deer birthing season.

The day’s events are due to start with a parade at 12.30pm. There will also be:

  • Family Activities – Pony rides, classic games, and nature-themed fun.
