CRUCIAL MEETING FOR TEDDINGTON COMMUNITY OVER THE RIVER THAMES
A vital meeting will take place in Teddington next month to discuss the improvement of the River Thames, organised by the Teddington Society.
The meeting will include presentations from local river groups dealing specifically with the controversial Teddington Direct River Abstraction Scheme and the London Mayor’s missions for a ‘swimmable river’ and ‘drinkable Thames.’
“The Teddington Society is holding an event at The Lensbury in Broom Road to help local people appreciate the issues and understand how we can express our views,” says the Teddington Society.
The Society’s poster says the meeting is ‘exploring our responsibility to pass on a clean, sustainable and fully utilised river to future generations.”
The event is at 7pm on Monday, 16th June at the Lensbury and is FREE to everyone but those interested must register for a ticket.
Representatives of local river groups will present and lead the items and invite Q and A conversations on:
- Thames Water’s proposed Teddington Direct River Abstraction (TDRA) – led by Ian McNuff, Save Our Lands And River (SOLAR) – this summer the big consultation is on for this proposal to extract river water and replace with treated effluent just upstream of the weir
- The River Thames Scheme (RTS) – led by John Adams (River Users Group, Teddington Stretch) – this project will draw more flood water to this stretch and next year the Environment Agency/Surrey Council project plan to start major works to build more weir gates at Teddington
- Mayor of London’s mission for a “swimmable river”– a positive initiative to improve our amenity and river water quality in the stretch above the weir
- “Mayors for a Drinkable Thames” – a new initiative for the benefit of both river users and wildlife from river-fronting boroughs from Hounslow to Runneymede
- Chaired by Andy Weston, Teddington Society
