DEER HITS CYCLIST AFTER BEING CHASED BY DOG OFF LEAD
Police are investigating following an incident in Richmond Park after a runaway dog chased a herd of deer resulting in one of the frightened deer hitting a female cyclist, who needed hospital treatment, it was disclosed today.
It is understood she received rib and head injuries and was taken by ambulance to hospital.
The dog was off its lead which is against the law during the deer birthing season which runs from May 1st to July 31st and can lead to prosecution, depending on the circumstances.
A police source told Teddington Town: “A dog was off its lead, which then chased a herd of deer. One of the deer hit a cyclist on the road and she ended up coming off and in hospital.”
The police did not attend the scene but is now investigating as officials from the Royal Parks did attend.
Paul Richards, Park Manager, Richmond Park, said: “This is a very concerning incident and we wish the cyclist a swift recovery.”
A Royal Parks spokesperson said: “From 1 May to 31 July, during the deer birthing season, we strongly advise that dogs are not walked in Richmond Park or Bushy Park.
“However, if visitors choose to walk their dogs in these parks during this time, it is mandatory to keep them on a lead at all times, to help keep everyone safe and avoid dangerous incidents such as this.
“Female deer are highly protective of their young and may act defensively if they feel threatened – which can lead to serious accidents”
