NEW BRANDING FOR TEDDINGTON’S WH.SMITH

The well-known and instantly recognisable branding of WH. Smith in Teddington’s Broad Street is set to disappear to be replaced with the new owners of the store chain TG Jones.

The company, which is retaining its big airport outlets has made a formal application to Richmond Council to change the distinctive blue and white signage – which will be replaced by… identical blue and white signage saying TG Jones.

WH. Smith has been a familiar sight on high streets all over the country for the last 200 years and under the new ownership over 1,100 WH. Smith stores will be either closed down or rebranded.

Plans to open more than 100 new stores in airports, railways and hospitals are underway and these stores will not rebrand and remain as WH Smith.

The council application requests: “Rebrand. Replacing existing signage, like for like, WHSmith to TG Jones.”

It adds: “External works to replace main shopfront signage. Signage is being replaced in like for like size, build, and colourways, so will not interfere with the aesthetics or integrity of the building in any way. Existing fixing points will also be reused to avoid creating any extra holes or disruption.”

A decision is expected on 26 August.
