FORTY FIREFIGHTERS TACKLE BLAZE IN RICHMOND PUB BASEMENT

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters responded to a fire at the Angel and Crown pub on Church Court, Richmond.
Most of the basement was damaged by fire.
Two people left the building before the Brigade arrived and were assessed on scene by London Ambulance Service crews.
The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by the failure of an extension lead.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Some electrical appliances use more power than others, so be mindful not to overload extension leads and always check that you’re using the right fuse for the plug.
“Power-hungry appliances such as kettles, toasters and microwaves, shouldn’t be on the same extension. It’s also important to fully unwind drum extension leads. If you leave them coiled, they can overheat and cause a fire.”
The Brigade received the first call reporting the fire at 1827, and crews from Richmond, Kingston, Twickenham and surrounding fire stations were sent to the scene. Firefighters had the incident under control by 1914.
