LOCAL MP FIGHTS TO MAKE NURSERIES SAFER
Munira Wilson, MP for Twickenham, has pledged to push the Government to improve safeguarding for children in nurseries, following the horrific case of abuse at Twickenham Green Montessori, part of the Riverside Nursery group.
Munira hosted a roundtable in Parliament for the parents of children who were abused by nursery worker Roksana Lecka at Twickenham Green Montessori, to hear from them what changes need to be made to prevent such abuse from happening again.
Lecka was convicted of 21 counts of child cruelty at Kingston Crown Court on 26 September 2025.
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Early Education, Olivia Bailey MP, attended the roundtable to meet with the parents.
Also present were industry experts Neil Leitch, CEO of the Early Years Alliance; Jenny Ward, CEO of the Lullaby Trust; representatives from Ofsted; and Ruth Cadbury, MP for Brentford and Isleworth.
Following the roundtable, Munira Wilson said: “The abuse that happened at Twickenham Green Montessori has revealed frightening weaknesses in safeguarding in the early years sector.
“For the children who were abused and their parents, we need to see real change to how safeguarding is implemented and enforced.
“I heard how parents felt completely blindsided by the lack of transparency around the qualifications and safeguarding training needed to look after vulnerable children and babies.
“The first five years of a child’s life are crucial, and parents should feel confident that the nurseries they place their children in are providing the best care possible.
“The Government must do everything in its power to make sure nurseries and early years settings are safe for our children.
“I will continue to press the Government to make the necessary changes to protect our children so that this abuse can never happen to another child again.”
