LOCAL MP URGES MET POLICE TO ‘GET ON’ WITH THE SALE OF TEDDINGTON POLICE STATION

A new 10-year Estate Strategy, published today by the Met Police and Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) confirms the ‘disposal’ of Teddington Police station, it was confirmed today.
The huge empty former police station building in Park Road was closed to the public in 2017 and decommissioned in 2022 amid calls for the building to be redeployed as a community hub with a new Park Road GP Surgery and much-needed housing.
Munira Wilson, the Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham, has been calling on the Metropolitan Police to publish the long-delayed Estates Strategy for years, as part of her campaign to repurpose the derelict Teddington Police Station for community use.
Responding to the Strategy, Munira Wilson MP said, “I welcome the Estates Strategy and its commitment to disposing of Teddington Police Station, which has lain abandoned for years.
“Now, I’m calling for the Met to get on with the sale so we can get the GP surgery and affordable housing the local community needs.”
The future of Teddington Police Station had been in limbo since it was closed in 2021 – the same year that the MPS had originally promised to release its Estates Strategy.
Since then, the building has remained empty and unused and become a local eyesore with graffiti, whilst the Met has spent £195,473.98 on its repairs since its closure.
Munira has been campaigning to turn Teddington Police Station into a new home for Park Road GP surgery – which is currently struggling in outdated and unsuitable premises – and much-needed affordable homes for residents.
In 2023, Munira secured a change in legislation to ensure that police sites could be sold below market value for community benefit, rather than simply be flogged off to the highest bidder.
Munira has raised the issue of the planned closure of police front counters across London, including in Twickenham which is now the subjects of a legal challenge by Richmond Council.
