  1. Types of Certificates

Shotgun Certificate (SGC) – This certificate is essential for smooth-bore guns with barrels longer than 24 inches.

Firearm Certificate (FAC) – It’s crucial for rifles, muzzle-loading pistols, or other section 1 firearms. Remember, these necessitate stricter justification – such as club membership or written permission from a landowner to shoot over their land.

Co-terminous Certificate – In case you need both licenses, this combined, cheaper application is worth considering. This allows them to expire simultaneously.

  1. Eligibility Requirements

Age – No minimum age is specified to apply for a shotgun certificate. However, under-18s have restrictions. If you’re planning to apply for a firearm, you must be 18 or older.

Criminal Record – Applying for an arms license isn’t allowed if you’ve served a prison sentence of 3 years or more. If you have served between 3 months and 3 years, wait 5 years after release before applying for an arms license.

Medical Fitness – It’s strongly advisable to disclose any physical and mental health problems, be it epilepsy, depression, dementia, or alcoholism, to the police.

  1. Application Process

The Metropolitan Police encourage online applications for efficiency.

Prepare Documents – You must have a digital photograph (passport-style, clear background) and gather details of your GP.

References – Nominate 2 people to act as referees. Make sure they have known you for at least 2 years and aren’t your family members.

Medical Proforma – Visit the MPS website to download the medical questionnaire and have your GP complete it.

Submit Application – Through the Metropolitan Police Firearms Licensing page, apply for an arms license.

Fee Payment – In 2024, the fee for obtaining a new shotgun certificate was £194, whereas the fee for a firearm certificate grant was £198.

Home Inspection – A Firearms Enquiry Officer (FEO) will then visit your home to assess your security arrangements.

Interview – They will ask you about what’s the reason for needing the firearm and whether you know safety measures.

  1. Storage and Security

It’s mandatory to have a secure, police-approved gun safe (that meets British Standard 7558) installed at your home in Teddington. Upon visitation, the FEO will check this.

  1. Timeline and Validity

Wait Times – Applications can take a few weeks to several months to get approved, depending on police capacity.

Duration – Certifications remain valid for five years.

Renewal – The wise approach is to apply for renewal at least 8 weeks before your certificate expires.
