TEDDINGTON BUSINESSMAN SET FOR MIGHTY HIKE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CANCER CHARITY
Teddington businessman Jim Sykes is making plans to do the Mighty Hike half-marathon challenge in the Peak District raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support.
Jim will set off with close friends Robin Martin, Brian Waltham and Nick Gorrod on July 20 around Bakewell to hike 14 miles across the stunning landscape.
Jim, who is in training by walking around Bushy Park, told Teddington Town: “We have huge admiration for the tireless work that Macmillan do for all that are affected by this hideous disease and are therefore trying to raise money for their continued success and care.
“We are taking on a Half Marathon Mighty Hike through the beautiful and dramatic Peak District National Park to raise vital funds for people living with cancer.
“We’ve formed a team, called ‘The Dodo’s’ which is part of a larger group of friends, most of which have either been affected directly or indirectly by cancer.
“As a group of men ‘of a certain age’…..we have known each other for many years and have very sadly recently lost a very dear friend to cancer and some of the group are still fighting their own personal battles against this awful disease.
“We used to play football together in our younger years, now we play golf together and in July 2024, some of The Dodo’s will be hiking together!
“Please donate what you can, however large or small. We are a small cog in a huge machine, so every little helps. Thanks in advance.
“We have each pledged to raise £250 and would really appreciate any support in reaching this. By fundraising our pledge, we could pay for a Macmillan Support Worker, who could provide emotional, practical and financial advice to someone affected by cancer.
“My friends and I lost a really close friend to cancer 2 years ago. He was an unbelievable man who used to come over from the US and play golf with us in Spain every year. My mum died of breast cancer over 34 years ago and a friend who is very close to my heart lost her son to cancer at the age of 16.
“One of our group who is walking the Mighty Hike had throat cancer and has been cured. Macmillan are an unbelievable charity and deserve every penny of support.”
