MYSTERY OF ST GEORGE’S FLAGS APPEARING IN TEDDINGTON’S BROAD STREET
A number of St George’s flags have mysteriously appeared tied to lamp posts in Broad Street, Teddington, we can reveal today,
Shopkeepers, Broad Street businesses and local residents seemed to be in the dark about who was behind the flags or their purpose. There are about ten flying from the junction of The Causeway down towards Tesco supermarket.
They are believed to have been in place since Tuesday morning and are attached to the lamp posts by plastic tags. None are visible in High Street.
Teddington Together – which organises the Christmas Lights Up event – were unaware of who was behind the flags but had been told the Council planned to remove them,
St. George’s flags and Union flags have been seen in many unusual places, such as hanging from motorway bridges, over the last month, as part of a protest over the immigration debate and especially in areas where asylum seekers have been temporarily housed in hotels and houses of multiple occupation (HMO’s)
One post on X says: “@LBRuT_Help can you please get rid of the St George’s cross flags which have been cable tied all the way up Broad street Teddington on the lamp posts overnight. The intent is not welcoming of all and is not welcomed by many Teddington residents. Thanks.”
Asked about the origin of the flags by Teddington Town today one unnamed retailer in Broad Street help up his hands in triumph and said: “They should be everywhere. Good luck to them.”
Teddington Town has contacted Richmond Council and is awaiting a response.
