TEDDINGTON’S 87 YEAR OLD HUMANITARIAN RETURNS TO UKRAINE TODAY

Robin has raised funds with Kew Gardens Rotary Club to provide laptops to bombed-out schools in Ukraine
Eighty-seven year old Robin, from Teddington sets off on his new mission today

Teddington’s 87 year old Robin Jowit returns to war-torn Ukraine today (saturday) on the latest phase of his remarkable one-man humanitarian mission.

Travelling alone, he plans to visit the capital Kyiv and Kharkiv over a fifteen day period where he will host dinners to mark the amazing funds raised and work supported by the Kew Gardens Rotary Club – especially in their support for children, which triggered Robin’s initial interest.

He will travel by train, bus and plane to visit three schools where Rotary International have installed water filter systems in the bunkers to save bottled water when teachers and children have to stay during drone attacks and ten schools to check on previous items donated and installed.

Robin, a former school governor and mayor of Richmond, who lives in Teddington, has helped to supply laptops, sports equipment, flood lighting and education items to support students studying STEM subjects who he thinks will be the ‘architects of Ukraine’s future.’

In Kyiv his focus will be exploring opportunities at a special needs school and watching children flying drones, which he has personally donated.

In Kharkiv where he has already delivered five 3D Printers, the children will be demonstrating their skills and he will be presenting laser scanners and 3D printers to other schools.

He tells Teddington Town: “It is a very busy program, especially for someone of 87 and I sincerely hope there will me a chance to meet the Governor of Kharkiv.

“In summary, check on what we have delivered, check on work in progress and assess further needs, especially items to assist their STEM education to educate the next generation of engineers to rebuild UKRAINE.
“So far we have raised £121,000 with a target of £150,000, it is impossible to get insurance and under Rotary rules, I pay my own expenses.”
Robin, a former RAF pilot, launched his mission to help in January 2023 because, he says, he couldn’t read anything about the ‘impact the war had on children’ and on his first visit he saw eight schools where the Russian invaders had caused most damage and the children were forced to have lessons in bunkers.
