DEMOLITION OF OLD ELLERAY HALL BEGINS

Elleray Hall, now replaced by the new modern Elleray Cebtre is being demolished to make way for a new social housing project.
Demolition experts are on the site as the Elleray Centre opened its shiny new doors on Thursday evening during Teddington Lights Up.
History and architecture:
- Construction: Built around 1907, it was a corrugated iron hall often called a “Tin Tabernacle”.
- Community funding: Local people raised £730 to help fund the building’s erection, showing early community engagement.
- Community use: For 45 years, it was run by the Elleray Community Association, offering a variety of social activities, classes, and support services, particularly for older adults.
- Building condition: By the 2010s, the building was in a state of disrepair, expensive to heat, and no longer fit for purpose.
Redevelopment:
- Plans: The London Borough of Richmond upon Richmond upon Thames decided to demolish the old building to make way for a modern community center and an affordable housing scheme.
- New location: The new community center will be built on the nearby former depot and North Lane (East) car park site.
- Demolition: The old Elleray Hall building will be totally demolished in 2025 after a fond farewell event.
- New development: The new facility will be a modern, purpose-built centre, with the old site being used to build 16 units of affordable housing
