PETITION LAUNCHED TO STOP CLOSURE OF TWICKENHAM POLICE STATION FRONT COUNTER

A petition has been started to try to halt the proposed closure of the public front counter of Twickenham Police station because of budget cuts, it was announced today.
It states: “The public front counter at Twickenham Police Station is a vital community resource that provides essential services and support to the local residents. Its closure would not only disrupt access to police services, but also weaken community ties and public trust in local law enforcement.
“Twickenham, known for its vibrant community, rich historical significance and the world famous rugby stadium deserves accessible and readily available policing services. The front counter is often the first point of contact for individuals seeking assistance, filing reports, or needing advice on safety and security. Without it, residents will face delays and inconveniences, potentially putting their safety at risk.
“According to several studies, face-to-face interactions at police stations foster better relationships and trust between the public and law enforcement agencies. The closure of such facilities can lead to increased crime rates because individuals feel less encouraged to report crimes without a personal interaction option.
”Moreover, the public counter is critical for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, those without internet access, or individuals with communication barriers who rely on in-person support that cannot be replaced by online and telephone services.
“The financial implications of keeping the front counter open are significantly outweighed by the benefits of community safety and engagement. Residents of Twickenham need assurance that their security and well-being are prioritized over budget cuts.
“We urge the Mayor of London and the Metropolitan Police Service to reconsider this decision and explore alternative measures to enhance public safety without closing vital resources. Options could include community fundraising, volunteer staffing, or government grants dedicated to preserving public front counters in police stations across London.
“Please sign this petition to help save the Twickenham Police Station front counter and ensure that our community remains strong, safe, and supported.”
