ENVIRONMENT AGENCY REMOVE ABANDONED AND SUNKEN BOATS

The Environment Agency is removing abandoned and sunken boats in the River Thames near Teddington and Molesey.
The number of boats has increased dramatically over the last two years and as well as creating an eyesore they can represent a hazard to river traffic.
A spokesperson said: “We’re removing abandoned boats today from the Lower Thames.
“These boats blight the river and we’re aware of the impact they can have.
“All boats kept or used on the Thames need to be registered.
“Sunk and abandoned boats blight the River Thames, and we are aware of the impact they can have on those who live near or use the river.
“It is not our role to clear up after irresponsible boaters.
“It is boat owners’ responsibility to make sure their boat is registered and complies with our registration requirements – including having insurance and a valid boat safety scheme certificate.
“Non-compliance could lead to prosecution or the boat being removed.”

Local Lib Dem MP for Esher and Walton Monica Harding has campaigned for the removal of the boats.
She said: “More progress today on removing the abandoned and wrecked boats from our river banks as the Environment Agency with support from the police take more action in our patch.
“I’ve been pushing the Environment Agency hard for more resource to remove ALL the abandoned and wrecked boats on our stretch of the river so I’m pleased with this action early in the New Year.
“After a decade of inertia from responsible agencies, I’m working closely with the new EA task force team – set up after my Parliamentary debate – local residents and partner services including Elmbridge Borough Council and Surrey Police to tackle this long-standing issue and to help return our river to a place that everyone can enjoy and feel proud of.
“Today is another step forward but with still more to do – I’ll continue to keep pushing hard for residents.”
