SWAN DIES OF BIRD FLU AT TEDDINGTON LOCK

A dead swan has been found near Teddington Lock following the widespread outbreak of bird flu, it has been confirmed.
The mute swan was found upstream of the Lock yesterday afternoon. Two other swans have died near Richmond and Kingston according to the DEFRA website, which has recorded 163 deaths of birds from Avian influenza including geese, owls, buzzards, gulls, a goshawk, red kites and peregrine falcons.
The swan found near Teddington was taken to The Swan Sanctuary at Shepperton, the first they have had to deal with.
According to the Sanctuary: “There is indeed bird flu all around us at the moment and the best advice is published by DEFRA and the RSPCA and we endorse what they are saying,
“If you see a sick bird keep yourself and your pets away, any worries about your pet contact a vet straight away.
“This year the flu is presenting slightly differently: Infected birds are lethargic and easily approachable; Discharge from the beak; Eyes appear to have a blue hue; Some will have blood in the eyes.”
DEFRA advice states:
- Keep to footpaths with dogs on leads
- Do not feed wild waterfowl
- Do not pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds
- Do not touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings
- If you keep poultry or other birds, wash your hands, clean and disinfect your footwear before tending your birds
