LORD LEBEDEV’S HAMPTON COURT MANSION ON THE MARKET FOR £25 MILLION

The Grade 11-listed eight-bedroomed estate and mansion of controversial Lord Lebedev in Hampton Royal Park has been put for sale for £25 million, it was revealed today.

Located within the grounds of Hampton Court Palace in East Molesey beside the River Thames, The Stud House at Hampton Court Palace was built in the early 18th century.

The Royal Stud had been at Hampton Court since the reign of William III and in 1812 George IV revised the breeding of blood-stock. In 1815 the stud buildings were placed under the office of works.

The 6 acre garden was completely re-designed by Mollie Salisbury (Marchioness of Salisbury).

The interiors were done by Patrick Kinmonth with the help of the antique dealer Edward Hurst.

The property includes:

An eight-bedroom main house dating from the 18th century.
Approximately 14 acres of private grounds within Hampton Court Park.
Tennis court, swimming pool, landscaped gardens, and additional outbuildings.

Stud House has been Lord Lebedev’s principal UK residence for many years and has hosted numerous high-profile guests.

The stunning property features a library, a morning room, a reading room and a grand reception hall, alongside grounds of more than six acres.

Its location, in Surrey, is described by estate agents Knight Frank as being “discreetly positioned in a highly sought-after enclave, surrounded by mature woodland and landscaped grounds, offering both tranquillity and security”.

The Crown Estate owns the house, with a lease of 150 years first granted to a Greek legal recruiter in 2004 for £1.25m, with an annual rent of £1,500 for the first 25 years, rising in stages to £48,000 a year by the end of the term

The land was redesigned by the late Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury, known as the “high priestess” of historic garden design. She also designed gardens for the King at his beloved Highgrove estate.

Stud House was bought by Lord Lebedev’s father, Alexander Lebedev, a former KGB operative and Russian businessman, in 2007, but by 2013 it was solely owned by Lord Lebedev, according to Land Registry documents.

That year, the lease was valued at “more than” £1m. A mortgage was taken out on the house in November 2020 with the UK arm of Deutsche Bank, the documents showed.

There is also an annual service charge of £300, according to Knight Frank, and the property is in council tax Band H.

Lord Lebedev told the Financial Times in 2024 that when he viewed Stud House with his father, “he was probably more in love with it than I was, but I can see now, having grown older, that it’s a special house.”

“It’s quintessentially English. Well, quintessentially English with a twist,” he said in an earlier interview.

The 46-year-old British-Russian businessman, who runs The Standard, previously The Evening Standard, was ennobled in July 2020 by Boris Johnson, the former Conservative prime minister.

The crossbench peer styles himself as Baron Lebedev, of Hampton in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and of Siberia in the Russian Federation.

He is reported to own a flat in central London near Regent’s Park, alongside castles co-owned with his father in Italy.
