Beat the winter blues with a stimulating Landmark Art Course

EventsThe Landmark Arts Centre offers a great range of leisure courses in visual arts and crafts both for adults, ranging from 6-8 weeks, and also for children once a month on Saturdays. Most of the courses feature a specific project offering variety and an ongoing learning structure for all participants.

In addition, the courses are designed for all levels of ability from beginners to intermediate. Their qualified tutors are practicing artists and regularly show their work in local galleries and art and craft fairs.

From the start of 2011 the range of courses are as follows:

Exploring Drawing – Starts 18th January
An eight week Tuesday evening course designed to help participants take their first steps in painting, looking in particular at how to draw with colour and colour theory. Core skills explored include tonal values, perspective and different drawing mark making techniques. Taught by Bob Meecham, a well-known tutor in the Kingston and Richmond area and a practicing artist with a particular interest in landscapes.

Botanical Art – Starts 17th and 19th January
This course has been a huge success and is taught by renowned local artist Marcia Hughes. With a choice of either Monday or Wednesday evening classes, the focus is on drawing and painting with watercolours foliage, flowers and fruit in a realistic manner. In 2010 Marcia Hughes received the HRH Princess Michael of Kent Award for the most outstanding watercolour in the Society of Women Artists’ exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London .

Painting Made Easy – Starts 19th January
Tutored by Ron Knott, this class offers participants a fun challenge, teaching the skills that are required to produce paintings using acrylic media on canvas. The project for this term will focus landscapes. An element of Art History is included, looking at traditional and contemporary landscape artists and how to develop a personal interpretation.

Contemporary Textiles and Felt making – Starts 1st February
This exciting craft course will explore the Nuno felt making technique, mixing wool fibres with sheer fabrics, and participants will produce their own handmade scarf. Basic wool fibres and fabrics are included for this course. The previous project featured making felt jewellery and was very popular so early booking recommended. Tutored by Cathy Unwin.

Printmaking – Starts 3rd February
Taught by local artist Jennie Ing, who is well-known for her work featuring London landscapes. Learn how to makes prints without a press, focusing on relief, mono printing and lino cut techniques. This course is fun and also helps to gain an understanding of forms, composition and colour scheme. Including basic materials the course runs for six weeks on Thursday evenings.

Creative Sketchbook – Starts 27th January
A new addition to the centre’s exciting range of classes, this course will take a mixed media approach allowing you to broaden your art skills. Sketchbooks are used widely as a tool by art students and aspiring artists alike and are essential to develop your creativity. Starting on Thursday afternoons on for 6 weeks with popular tutor Emily Burton, a perfect way to improve your drawing skills and to learn all about mixed media.

The Landmark Kid’s Art Club, a children’s Saturday morning class runs on a monthly basis and is extremely popular. Workshops range from drawing, collage, sculpture to painting and explore different art ideas every month. Suitable for children 5 – 11 years the emphasis is on fun, but productive learning. Early booking is recommended.
