Age Concern Richmond’s Handyperson Service provides a helping hand

NewsAge Concern Richmond’s Handyperson service currently works in over 90 homes in Teddington, helping people with odd jobs, like fitting a lock, changing a light bulb or putting up a shelf. If you live in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and are over 60 or have a disability you can call on the Age Concern Richmond’s Handyperson Service.

The service aims to help residents feel safe and secure within their own home. The kinds of jobs that the Handy people undertake on a daily basis are replacing curtain rails, installing hand rails or a key safe, they can even help with changing a light bulb if the person is not confident on a pair of steps.

The Handyperson Service can help with jobs in the garden like mending fences or tidying up the garden. They can install a range of telecare products which can help with improving safety, security and independence in the home. In 2010 home visit computer tuition was added to the service to help people with using the Internet and email.

Types of jobs supported include but are not limited to:

  • Changing light bulbs fuses and plugs
  • Putting up shelves
  • Fitting key safes and grab rails
  • Fitting locks, spy holes and door chains
  • Replacing broken light fittings
  • Replacing toilet seats
  • Repairing curtain rails
  • Fitting draught proofing
  • Moving furniture
  • Gardening
  • Installing telecare equipment (a combination of alarms, sensors and other equipment to help people live independently)
  • Help with computers and PCs

Each Handyperson is multi-skilled, experienced; Police CRB checked and will carry Age Concern I.D. They will also provide all the necessary tools. Visits are a subsidised rate of £30 for a 2-hour visit and materials are charged at cost price.

In the words of one resident “without the help of the Handyperson service I don’t think I would be able to continue living at home“.

“As you get older you often need more help as simple jobs become more difficult, for instance balancing on a ladder to change a light bulb. Just knowing that the Handyperson service exists has been a huge relief to me.”

If you or someone you know require a reliable, trust worthy person to carry out small repair jobs in your house or garden please contact Age Concern.
