Sainsbury’s opens – will Superdrug join them?

Sainsbury’s, formerly Calligaris furniture has now opened on Langham Road. After over 3 years of planning and local opposition back and forth the site is now open subject to controls on parking, lighting and delivery times which it is hoped Sainsbury’s will stick within. The site was opened by the Deputy Mayor of Richmond earlier today.

On our first visit – staff were really friendly and welcoming and the aisles are nice and wide – albeit not the range you’d see in Tesco’s as it’s a much smaller store. Opinion on our Facebook page has been divided from excitement to disappoint – only time will tell how it fits into the town and whether it impacts on any businesses in the area.

Superdrug has today submitted a planning application to take over the old Morissons M Local site that closed down last year. The store was never taken over by the new M Local chain who gained control of many of Morissons smaller sites and has been vacant for some time. This is another new store for that end of Broad Street with Woof Coffee recently moving in and Ribs & Burgers applying for planning permission where Bilas Tandoori used to be.
