Prolific flytipper receives suspended prison sentence and community service
An environmental menace who ran an illegal waste management business is banned from running a waste collection business and will have to carry out community service following enforcement action by Richmond Council.
Ryan Smith collected waste for payment and dodged disposal costs by flytipping rubbish he collected from commercial businesses in Twickenham, Staines and Redbridge in 2015.
Smith, of The Sidings, Leacroft, Staines pleaded guilty to a catalogue of offences at Guilford Crown Court.
In court yesterday, Mr Smith received 10 months imprisonment but suspended for 2 years. He was also given 200 hours non paid community service and was ordered to pay £7,000 in costs.
The court also issued Smith with a Criminal Behaviour Order which bans him from being involved in the waste collection business for 10 years unless he obtains a waste carrier licence from the Environment Agency.
He was also ordered to pay Mr Hoare of Devon Avenue, Twickenham £600 to cover the cost that Mr Hoare paid to dispose of the waste that was flytipped on his property.
“This is a case of just desserts. Mr Smith ran an illegal business – taking money from people to dispose of their waste. However, he was just dumping it in our beautiful borough.
“Flytipping is a criminal offence and I hope this case sends a clear message to the small minority of people who choose to dispose of waste illegally and for illicit gain.”
