Building works underway on exciting new Secondary School

Construction work is now well underway on the exciting new secondary school opening in Twickenham this autumn.

The Richmond upon Thames School Trust is establishing a new secondary school in Twickenham as part of the Richmond upon Thames College’s redevelopment on Egerton Road. The school will open in September 2017.

The school building is being built as part of the Richmond Education and Enterprise Campus.

The school is governed by The Richmond upon Thames School Trust, made up of six partners: Harlequins, Haymarket Media Group, Richmond upon Thames College, Waldegrave School, Achieving for Children and Richmond Council.

The new building will be on the Egerton Road side of the Campus. Its modern design will be arranged around a central “heart” space, combining dining and social areas.

It is expected that the construction will be completed in June 2018. For the first two terms, the school will be based in dedicated, interim accommodation inside the College. This secure space is being adapted to suit the needs of a school, with classrooms, SEN facilities, dedicated outdoor provision, and reception area.

Kelly Dooley, Headteacher of the School, said: “This is fantastic news. The diggers are on site and the school building will be springing up in no time. This is great timing as over the last few days young people and their families have been finding out who is joining us in September.

“When they start, they will be able to get fully involved in the creation of the school – ranging from naming the school ‘houses’ to helping create art installations for key communal areas in the new building.

“We are now focusing on getting our interim accommodation inside the College all ready for their arrival, and I look forward to meeting them all over the next few months to show them our plans.”

Cllr Paul Hodgins, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Schools, said: “Few issues are as important to our borough as education. Providing high quality education for all is our core aim and we have been working with the College and other Free School Trust members to make our vision a reality.

“From the feedback we have received already from parents with young children our unique, innovative educational vision has gained a lot of support, proving there is local demand. I look forward to seeing this development come alive over the next few months.”
