Community groups lead the way in fight against litter

A community litter pick has made a huge difference to the environment around the Small Profits towpath and wooded area near Ferry Lane.

Following last month’s Oxford versus Cambridge boat race, the group worked tirelessly to pick up litter and ensure the environment around the riverside remained clean and tidy.

Led by the Barnes Tidy Towpath Group, the nine litter picker members collected a whole range of items including small plastics, bits of polystyrene and bottle tops, enough to fill a number of bags that the Council were able to collect. This has made a huge difference to the area around the river.

Ishbel Murray, Assistant Director for Environment and Community Services said:

“The boat race is one of the busiest days for the area around the riverside with thousands of people out for the day and much pick up needed. Barnes Tidy Towpath did a fantastic job during and after the boat race to ensure the riverside environment was protected and restored over the weekend. I would like to thank them for their efforts!”
