Council moves in on travellers in Ham

Travellers who have temporarily pitched up on Ham Common are being giving their marching orders by Richmond Council and the local Police.

On late Thursday evening, Richmond Council received reports of travellers bringing 22 caravans, other vehicles and dogs, illegally establishing themselves on  the Common.

As is normal practice, Council officers have visited the site and if the travellers do not move the Council will start legal proceedings for an eviction order. In the meantime, together with the local Police, officers are trying to negotiate an amicable move.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

“Richmond Council does not permit illegal use of our parks and when it happens we act swiftly.

“Our officers, with the support of the local Police, visited the park last night to ask the travellers to move on. This morning we will be revisiting the site and will progress with legal proceedings if the travellers have failed to move on.

“We will continue to work with the local community as we know that they are concerned. Reports of specific anti-social behaviour should be reported to the police.”
