Richmond Council Are Supporting #QuitForCovid

Smoking is a massive issue around the world as the addiction can cause a variety of health implications such as various cancers, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, COPD and problems to your immune system.

“Every 15 cigarettes you smoke will cause a mutation in your body; mutations are how cancers start” – NHS.

Due to the issues of breathing and other implications smoking has, it can cause you to be more vulnerable to catching Covid-19. Smoking can also make it a lot harder to fight Covid-19 as it can cause you to be weaker and your immune system may not be strong enough to fight it.

Richmond Council is joining the NHS and Public Health England, in encouraging smokers to try to quit to protect themselves and others from Covid-19, as part of the new #QuitForCovid campaign.

In Richmond alone there are about 12,100 regular smokers who are at risk of getting ill and having long-term diseases if they don’t quit. Quitting smoking can add about 10 years more to your life.

How To Get Support

The Council offers a stop smoking service, this a free service that offers tailored evidence based advice and support. You are 4 times more likely to quit if you use a service to help encourage you as you go through quitting.

They also advise on professional help offered by GPs and pharmacists in the borough.
