Get to school on foot this Walk to School Week

Next week is Walk to School Week and Richmond Council is encouraging the young people of Richmond upon Thames’ to walk, cycle or scoot to school. Walk to School Week runs from Monday 17 to Friday 21 May 2021.

Walk to School Week is organised by Living Streets, with young people being encouraged to make as many active journeys to school as possible. Richmond Council is backing the scheme and is urging all parents to walk their children to school next week whether their school is taking part or not.

Support for Walk to School Week is part of Richmond Council’s ongoing commitment to encourage active travel across the borough. Richmond Council has a dedicated member of staff that helps schools draw up travel plans, as well as organising road safety talks, shows and training.

School travel plans aim to reduce traffic and pollution outside schools, promote safety and improve the health of young people.

Schools with travel plans are encouraged to work towards Transport for London’s STARS accreditation programme with 44 schools across Richmond upon Thames already accredited.

Richmond Council also works with schools that have travel plans to bring in road safety schemes where necessary, including school streets which sees some roads with schools temporarily close to become a pedestrian and cycle zone-only during the school’s opening and closing times, to enhance the safety of school children. Richmond upon Thames now has 14 school streets.

The Council also provides cycling training to young people in schools during term time and directly through free bookable sessions during the holidays. Pedestrian and scooter training is also provided in schools.
