Fallow deer killed by dog in Bushy Park

A young deer has been killed by an uncontrolled dog in Bushy Park just before the compulsory leads rule comes into force tomorrow (May 1)

The dogs on leads rule is enforced in Bushy Park, Richmond Park and Home Park to help protect the herd of deer during the annual deer-birthing season which starts now.

The deer become fiercely protective of their young during the period  between May 1 until July 31 and will attack any dogs if they feel under threat.

About 300 deer will be born during the period.

The Royal Parks rule is unpopular amongst dog owners who want to let their dogs off the leads to run in the vast parkland but other local areas are dog friendly and easily accessible.

Phil Edwards, Manager, Bushy Park, said: “A fallow deer was discovered dead after tragically being mauled to death.

“While we did not see the incident, our wildlife officer indicated that it was extremely likely to have been an attack by a dog.

“We wish to remind all visitors of the importance of controlling their dogs at all times.

“Visitors must keep their dogs on a lead during deer birthing season from May 1 to July 31 to avoid distressing, and fully-avoidable incidents, such as this, which can result in tragedy.”

Failure to control dogs during this time can lead to prosecution of owners and hefty fines.
