Richmond Council leader Cllr Gareth Roberts celebrates election to the London Assembly

 

London Assembly: South West

The Leader of Richmond Council Gareth Roberts secured election for the South West constituency to the Greater London Assembly for the Liberal Democrats with 66.675 votes.

The Labour candidate Marcela Benedetti was second and received  50,656 votes with Conservatives trailing in third with 49.981 votes.

It’s the first time a member other than a Labour or Conservative has won a constituency seat.

After his triumph Cllr. Roberts said: “After troubled times in recent years, this is a real boost for Lib Dems in London.

“I really hope that this is going to translate into more MP’s, We’re back.”

Cllr.Roberts also revealed that he would continue in his role as Leader of the Richmond Council claiming it has done before with other council leaders serving on the London Assembly.

Local MP Munira Wilson welcomed the victory.

She wrote: “Chuffed to bits to see Gareth_Roberts elected as our new South West London Assembly Member. A historic victory! Looking forward to working with him.

“I know he’s going to do a fab job ensuring SW London’s voice is heard at City Hall and holding Sadiq Khan to account.”
