TOP REFEREE WAYNE BARNES IS MADE AN OBE
Twickenham-based rugby union referee Wayne Barnes has been recognised for his services to the sport with an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List, it was disclosed today (sat)
Wayne, 45, a barrister, is a big supporter of the community fundraising group SporTedd (www.sportedd.co.uk) in Teddington.
He retired in November 2023 after refereeing 111 Test Matches including the 2023 World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand in France, which South Africa 12-11.
He worked in five Rugby World Cups and was in charge of 26 Six Nations matches and recently wrote a best-selling book called Throwing The Book, offering fascinating insights into his long career as the man in the middle.
Close friend and former top referee Nigel Owens MBE said: “Congratulations my fiend on a very well-deserved OBE.”
