HAWKER CENTER TO INCREASE SECURITY FOLLOWING TRAVELLERS INCIDENT
The YMCA Hawker Centre across the river from Teddington will introduce new security measures to ensure travellers cannot enter and damage the community facility again.
The centre partially reopening today with a full programme of tennis, gym, Reformer Pilates and group exercise classes but the car park and soft play remains closed until further notice.
A spokesperson for the centre told Teddington Town: “As advised by the Borough and Police, it is our understanding that although most of the travellers have now moved out from the Ham area, a group of travellers is still present in the Richmond area, meaning YMCA Hawker is still at risk.
“With this in mind, we will need to provide some additional security on site for a short period of time, and we are also in the process of arranging long-term adaptations to our car park entrance to reduce the risk of this ever happening again.
“We understand the arrangement is not ideal but we will give a further update to our customers when all services will be resuming, as well as the process of utilising their membership during the closure.”
Full details of the extent of the damage and cleaning up operation have not been disclosed.
