WALDEGRAVE ROAD CLOSURE – FULL COUNCIL STATEMENT

Roadworks at the Strawberry Vale end of Waldegrave Road at junction of Tower Road
Work will continue until September and 33 bus routes are diverted

Official
Strawberry Vale Drainage Scheme Update

Following on from the positive consultation of the Strawberry Vale flood resilience proposal, the Council is pleased to inform you the design is now completed, and construction is scheduled to begin on the 27th of August.

Construction is expected to be complete by the end of September. The planting of the tree may be delayed until the optimal planting period.

Road closures have been kept to a minimum but will be required to complete the works. Advance warnings are already in place on site. The junction of Waldegrave Road and Tower Road will be closed between the 27th of August 2024 and 10th of September 2024.

The diversion route will be from Waldegrave Road, High Street Teddington, Manor Road, Strawberry Vale to Cross Deep.

Appropriate pedestrian diversions will also be in place.

We apologise for any disruption this road closure causes, and will aim to re-open the road as soon as possible.

Background

Strawberry Vale and the surrounding streets have suffered repeated flood incidents, including four incidents within the space of two months in the summer of 2021.

These incidents have been partially attributed to tide locking (where the outlet to the Thames is blocked due to high tide), which causes surface water to back up onto the road.

There have also been instances of sewer flooding on the road which have been attributed to a blockage which has now been resolved by Thames Water.

In addition, Thames Water are monitoring the capacity of their sewer network in this area. The Council is working alongside Thames Water to resolve the sewer capacity issues in Strawberry Vale.

Proposal

The scheme will introduce a tree pit and underground attenuation tank at the roundabout between Strawberry Vale, Cross Deep, and Waldegrave Road.

The site is currently made up of large grey paving areas which would benefit from greening. There is an existing tree on site which will need to be removed for an underground water retention system to be put in place.

This tree will be replaced upon completion of the civil works with a tree of a similar species. Attenuating water at this location will reduce the quantity of surface water runoff from up to 4 different roads from overwhelming the sewer network at this location.

This would help to reduce the risk of sewer flooding which has occurred in this location on multiple occasions.

We thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during these works. If you have any questions of comments about the scheme, please feel free to contact us at:
