A total of 6204 fun runners descended upon Bushy Park today to celebrate 1000th 5km event at 9am.

The car parks were full well before 9am and hundreds of runners cycled to the park to secure a place in the starting line up.

Regular runners wore their tee-shirts indicating they had run 500, 100, 50 and even 750 parkruns before the anniversary event. Others pushed buggies and ran with their dogs on leads.

The first ever parkrun was in Bushy Park in October 2004 with just 13 runners.

Four runners carried gold balloons forming the 1000 number and two others were dressed as dolphins. Enthusiasts came from all over the country to be part of the historic event.

Organisers urged the runners to be ‘kind to each other’ and thanked the record number of 136 volunteers for their support marshalling the route of the event.
