Our local Liberal Democrat MP Munira Wilson is seeking a full-time Policy Caseworker, who is a self-starter and motivated team player, to join her team.

Excellent research and written communication skills are an absolute must, as is the ability to learn quickly.

The job offers a great opportunity to get a first hand experience in the highly charged political world and understand the role and responsibilities of a MP.

The successful candidate will work with Munira’s Correspondence Officer and Westminster team to process the vast volume of correspondence from constituents on a wide variety of policy issues, ensuring that they receive timely and informative responses.

As well as dealing with correspondence efficiently and sensitively, with an eye for detail, you will also attend policy surgery appointments with Munira, ensuring that any relevant actions are dealt with promptly.

Job Title: Policy Caseworker (F/T)

Location: Flexible (but able to go to either Westminster or Twickenham)

Salary: In line with the IPSA pay scale

Length of contract: Permanent

Responsibilities include:

  • Draft responses to constituents reflecting Munira’s views on a wide range of issues and the actions she has taken
  • Deal with large numbers of standard campaign emails and more complex individual enquiries. Ongoing communication may be required.
  • Undertake research using a variety of sources to inform policy responses, including liaison with parliamentary policy advisors and the House of Commons Library
  • Assist with policy surgery appointments and other meetings, follow up as appropriate
  • Log all cases; monitor progress and ensure all identified actions are taken
  • Analyse patterns of enquiries and share the findings in regular meetings with Munira and other staff members
  • Work closely with Munira’s Westminster team to ensure, where possible, she is able to reflect constituents’ concerns in Parliament
  • Ensure records are kept and information managed confidentially and accurately in accordance with the MP and in line with the Data Protection Act
  • Provide cover for the Correspondence Officer during peak periods or staff leave

  • Ability to deal with and prioritise a large and varied caseload, and to work under pressure
  • Ability to manage expectations of constituents in sometimes challenging circumstances
  • Good IT skills including using a casework management system and MS Office applications
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Motivated to work independently and comfortable doing so, as well as able to work effectively as part of a small and disparate team
  • Willing to develop an understanding of parliamentary processes and how these can be used to champion constituents’ concerns
  • Sympathetic to the aims, values and policies of the Liberal Democrats
