Top job available as adviser to local Lib Dem MP Munira Wilson
The candidate will assist Munira in her role as spokesperson for education, science and culture

Local Liberal Democrat MP Munira Wilson is offering a job opportunity for a top trusted adviser to help her in Westminster, she revealed today.

Munira, MP for Twickenham, which covers Teddington, retained her seat at July’s general election with a hefty majority of 21457.

She wants the adviser to oversee her Westminster office, providing counsel and day-to-day support for her work as a senior spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats, leading the Education, Science & Culture (ESC) team.

The candidate will also manage relations with London media to amplify Munira’s work across a range of issues.

The ideal applicant will have experience of working in and around Westminster, as well as be passionate about delivering change for children and young people.

The ideal candidate is driven, politically astute and able to juggle many competing priorities.

They will be strategic but also happy to be heavily involved in delivering on the detail.

Alongside Munira’s parliamentary staff, the adviser will be expected to work hand in glove with Liberal Democrat staff, including the Political Advisers Unit (PAU), Commons Parliamentary Advisers (CPA) team and the media team, to ensure Munira is well prepared to lead on relevant legislation, and speak on behalf of the party in debates, at events and in the media.

They will support her to develop and maintain key external relationships in the field of education, children and family policy, as well as with regional media.

They will also need to support Munira in managing a variety of internal party stakeholders.

Key elements of the role include:

  1. Leading the Westminster office
    1. Support strategy development and track delivery, ensuring ESC team and Team Twickenham priorities are being delivered in Westminster
    1. Mentor and advise Munira’s researcher/parliamentary assistant and manage intern
    1. Ensure Munira’s time outside the constituency is used as effectively as possible
  • Supporting Munira as a senior spokesperson for the party
    • Co-ordinate and provide secretariat for the ESC team fortnightly meetings
    • Liaise with the whips and spokespeople’s offices to ensure all ESC business is covered
    • Help Munira engage with parliamentary colleagues in the Commons, Lords, local government and other Lib Dem internal interest groups to ensure alignment on ESC priorities, policy and voting positions
  • Oversight of day to day parliamentary activity on the Education, Children and Families brief, working with the support of PAU and CPA to:
    • Draft oral questions, speeches and interventions for the chamber and Westminster Hall
    • Equip Munira to lead on legislation for the party, including tabling and pressing for amendments
    • Prepare briefings for speaking engagements and stakeholder meetings
  • Leading Munira’s personal campaigns and work on children’s issues, including kinship carers, children in care or the criminal justice system and her role as co-chair of the APPG for Children. This will include external stakeholder management and spotting opportunities for Munira to speak in Parliament or the media.
  • Support Munira’s Education, Children and Families work in the constituency including:
    • Responding to any policy casework relevant to the portfolio
    • Attending her twice-yearly school governor meetings and supporting with any follow-up actions
  • Communications:
    • Clip and share on social media Munira’s activity on the Education, Children and Families brief
    • Liaise with HQ media team on managing national broadcast bids and signing off lines
    • Develop relationships with regional media (BBC/ITV London, Evening Standard, etc)
    • Support Munira’s Researcher and constituency assistant with pitching, bids and briefings for regional media
    • Communicating Munira’s work internally within the Lib Dems where appropriate
  • Party conference:
    • Manage Munira’s conference diary
    • In tandem with PAU, prepare speeches and fringe event briefings
    • Staff Munira at conference

Skills & experience required

  • Experience of working in or around Westminster/Whitehall
  • Familiar with parliamentary process
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Experience of drafting speeches and briefings
  • Strong networker and political thinker
  • Passionate about campaigning for and delivering change to improve the lives of children and young people in England
  • Confident in providing strategic advice under pressure and unafraid to challenge
  • Highly driven and able to juggle a heavy workload
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Committed to Liberal Democrat values
