The dog, believed to be a Springer Spaniel, is thought to have chased a herd of fallow deer, and at some stage, managed to separate one of the deer from the herd and launched its attack.
According to the police the owner did not wait at the scene and ‘walked away.’
He was wearing a black coat, blue denim jeans and a dark red beanie hat.
Teddington Town understands the actual attack was filmed by a witness but is considered ‘too distressing’ to release.
It is a criminal offence to allow any animal which a person is in charge of to chase, worry or injured any other animal contrary to S4 (21) Royal Parks and other Open Spaces Regulations 1997.
A Royal Parks police spokesperson said: “Do you know this male, or perhaps more likely, do you recognise the dog?
“We would like to speak to the dog owner in relation to a fatal attack on a deer in Richmond Park?”
The attack happened at about 12.30pm yesterday near to Sheen Cross.
