LOCAL MP NAMECHECKS TEDDINGTON’S SHAMBLES RESTAURANT IN HOUSE OF COMMONS DEBATE

The family-run High Street Italian restaurant Shambles in Teddington was highlighted in the House of Commons yesterday by local Lib Dem MP Munira Wilson, who said the owners faced an increased bill of between £50.000 and £60.000 next year as a direct ‘impact’ of the recent Labour budget.
She told the House the house that as a result, the restaurant was ‘freezing all recruitment for the next few months.”
Munira asked: “How is that going to deliver the growth that the Labour Party is apparently desperate to achieve?”
Her social media post said “Shambles is a family-run, popular restaurant in Teddington that is now facing eye-watering costs as a result of the recent Budget. Labour claims to be the party of growth yet their policies are hurting our small businesses and high streets.”
Owner Massimo described the government’s plans for growth as a ‘load of codswallop.’
He added: “This budget is making our business even more difficult than ever with the combination of rises in the national insurance contributions, which although small, mount up when you have a number of staff.
“The minimum wage also has an impact because it means we have to increase those salaries of those who are earning more than the minimum wage so this has a knock on effect too.
“We can’t put up our prices because people are not going out as much because they are trying to save money given the economic uncertainty so we have to find other ways of saving money. If this is the way this government wants to encourage growth, they are going about it in a very strange way.”
Shambles, which opened in 1983, is part of the Small Business Saturday campaign which highlights 100 small businesses, one a day for 100 days leading up to Small Business Saturday 2024!
For the last eleven years, the 100 have not only received exposure on Small Business Saturday’s social media channels and in the local and national press, but also joined the Small Business Saturday team in London at receptions in Downing Street, House of Lords and the Treasury Drum with the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
