Local councillors were joined by volunteers today as part of the campaign to save the Royal Parks police in Bushy and Richmond Parks.
The Richmond Lib Dem MP Sarah Olney, the Leader of the council Cllr. Gareth Roberts and Cllr. Julia Cambridge joined placard-waving campaigners.
According to local sources including the Friends of Bushy and Home Parks, the Metropolitan Police is considering axing police cover because of government cutbacks.
Now a petition called Save The Royal Parks Police has been launched by the Richmond and Twickenham Liberal Democrats.
Cllr. Cambridge said: “Time is running out, please sign the petition.”
Cllr. Roberts said:”You may be unaware that there is a threat to the Royal Parks Police.
“Unfortunately owing to the historic underfunding of the Metropolitan Police, the Commissioner is looking at all options for reduction of service and the Royal Parks Police is one of the services which he is considering cutting.
The petition states: “We are concerned at the recent announcement that due to police cuts policing units within the Royal Parks will be disbanded. Richmond Park and Bushy Park have remained comparatively safe with low levels of anti-social behaviour because of the work and specialist knowledge of the Parks Police stationed there. We call on the Home Office to adequately fund the MET police so this action doesn’t become needed – please sign our petition below.”
