TWICKENHAM WOMAN RUNS MARATHON IN MEMORY OF CANCER VICTIM PAL

Emily is running in memory of her best friend Gaz
Emily, 33, and friend Gaz, is hoping to raise £2400 for the charity through her marathon efforts

EMILY SWAN’S STORY

“In April 2025, I’m running the London Marathon for Sarcoma UK in memory of my best mate Gaz.

Gaz was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare type of bone and soft tissue cancer in 2014 when he was 21.

Over the next 8 years, Gaz underwent 48 rounds of chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant and more rounds of radiotherapy than he could count. You wouldn’t know it though – we spent those 8 years enjoying countless good times, festivals, BBQs and holidays.

Sometimes he’d come straight to the pub from chemo.

In August 2022, we very sadly lost Gaz and me, his friends and family continue to do everything we can to continue his incredible legacy.”

Fundraising for Sarcoma UK

Many of you will know this isn’t my first fundraising challenge for Sarcoma UK.

In November 2020, Gaz’s cancer diagnosis became terminal after the cancer spread to his brain.

He immediately decided to focus on something positive; raising as much money and awareness as possible for Sarcoma UK.

He decided to do this by cycling 1000 miles from Lands End to John O’Groats across 12 days in June 2021.

I joined him for the challenge along with his wife Zoe, his Dad Andy and our best mate Zoe A. Gaz trained for the bike ride whilst on chemotherapy and took a short break from treatment to complete the challenge. The bike ride raised £117,000 for Sarcoma UK (their largest ever fundraiser to date) and also secured a large amount of media coverage for the charity.

Following Gaz’s passing, in September 2023 a 50-strong group of us completed the Three Peaks Challenge raising a further £65,000 for Sarcoma UK. The Gaz Emmerson Fund, set up in Gaz’s memory and with all proceeds going to Sarcoma UK, now stands at a mind blowing £307,000. This marathon is my next (and probably most challenging) contribution to his fundraising legacy.

Sarcoma UK

Sarcoma UK is the only national charity that funds vital research, offers support for those affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments. At present they receive no government funding despite the incredible and crucially important work they undertake.

I’ve had a great deal of involvement with the charity over the past 4 years and continue to be inspired by the commitment of the sarcoma team and their achievements in the field of research and patient care. In my eyes there is no worthier cause to be fundraising for and any contribution you are able to make to my fundraising total would be hugely hugely appreciated.

With huge thanks

Emily
