THIRD HEATHROW RUNWAY SPECULATION PROMPTS NEW FEARS
Speculation is mounting that The Chancellor Rachel Reeves will give the green light to a third runway at Heathrow airport next week triggering new concerns over the environment in south-west London.
The Chancellor is expected to use a speech on growth next week to support the proposed third runway at the west London airport and endorse expansion at Gatwick and Luton airports.
The government has said all expansion proposals must demonstrate they will contribute to economic growth while meeting environmental commitments.
On average, 536 flights arrive or depart from Heathrow every day.
From Heathrow you can fly to 214 destinations across 84 countries with 89 airlines to choose from.
Local Richmond MP Sarah Olney said: “The building of Heathrow’s third runway would have significant environmental, social and economic impacts on Richmond Park, as well as on households living in the vicinity of the airport.
“Any plans to expand Heathrow’s capacity must be opposed.
“The day after the No 3rd Runway Coalition meeting, I asked the Chancellor during Treasury Questions to provide a clear yes or no answer as to whether the Government plans to support Heathrow expansion.
“To my disappointment, Rachel Reeves avoided providing a direct response, as she stated that she would ‘not comment on leaks.’
“As this issue affects millions of people in the UK, it is concerning that the Chancellor refused to provide clarity on the Government’s position.
“Later that day, I was interviewed by ITV about the rumoured expansion plans. In this interview I reiterated my objections to a third runway, while citing the lack of data supporting the acclaimed economic benefits that expansion would bring.”
“Friends will be watching closely to hear what the Government has to say about a third runway at Heathrow.
