BIG RUGBY NAMES ATTEND SPORTEDD EVENT

Alison Kervin (far left) interviews Deb Griffin, Sonja McLaughlan and Wayne Barnes at The Wharf restaurant

Three big names from the world of rugby were the guests of honour at the latest SporTedd event in Teddington aimed at raising funds for local sport-themed projects.

They were former international referee and barrister Wayne Barnes, who lives locally, Deb Griffin, who will soon be the first ever female President of the RFU and TV rugby broadcaster Sonja McLaughlan.

The discussion, facilitated by SporTedd’s Alison Kervin, focussed on the Guinness Six Nations which reaches its climax this Saturday with the final round of games and France looking in a good position to win the Championship.

But the group also discussed the exciting prospect of the Women’s Rugby World Cup being hosted by England starting in August this year and the strong chances of the Red Roses lifting the trophy.

Sonja highlighted the growth and success of the women’s game as demonstrated by the BBC’s decision to broadcast this year’s World Cup.

About 75 guests enjoyed a three-course dinner at The Wharf restaurant in Teddington.

Wayne donated copies of his recent best-selling book Throwing The Book for the raffle and personally signed copies for the winners and tickets for the first Women’s Tennis Championships at the Queen’s Club from the LTA,  a pair of tickets for Arsenal’s next Champions League match against PSG from UEFA, tickets for Quins Big Summer Game against Gloucester at the Allianz Stadium, donated by Quins and a pair of tickets donated by the RFU for the Autumn International between England and Australia were also up for the raffle.

The audience heard from the Chair of SporTedd, Trevor Alldridge that the group had now raised over £104.000 since launch which had been distributed to over 80 projects and last night’s event is expected to raise another £2000.
