PLANS FOR STUNNING NEW BOATHOUSE ON TEDDINGTON RIVERSIDE

The construction of a new luxury boathouse on the river Thames is due to start as part of the elaborate refurbishment of a historic family home in Teddington, according to The Architects’ Journal.
The Tiggcoll practice’s proposal for a replacement boathouse at a privately-owned riverside family home, was granted planning approval on appeal by Richmond upon Thames council in June last year.
Work is now due to get under way on the structure, which will partially sit above a water inlet where a boathouse stood previously until 1959. TiggColl’s design includes a ‘rhythmic sliding façade’ created by glazing and natural whitewashed larch with exposed glulam larch beams and columns.
The internal volume of the boathouse is designed to increase towards the river, where a large glazed frontage provides views of the upper Thames.
The scheme will also connect the boathouse to a nearby garden using a small bridge over a planted area, which TiggColl says allows the existing landscape gradient to be maintained.
Speaking to the Architects’ Journal practice director David Tigg said the boathouse design acts as ‘both a practical, robust space for boat storage but also a place of retreat for work and relaxation’.
He added: ‘Our proposal aims to preserve and enhance the surrounding historical and natural charm of the Hampton Wick conservation area whilst contributing positively to the architectural experience within this collection of buildings.’
The project, which is due to complete in September, is part of a set of wider design proposals for the extensive refurbishment of the beautiful house.
