Twelve cyclists mostly in their nineties – with a total age of 994 years – must have become the oldest group ever to have ridden in Bushy Park.

The event was put on by the Teddington & Hampton Wick Voluntary Care Group on Saturday May 31st.

The group used specially adapted bikes supplied by park-based charity Companion Cycling, which allowed them to pedal alongside a helper.

One of the intrepid riders Betty, who is 100 next year, said: “I’ve been looking forward to this all year.

“I used to cycle everyday when I was younger, and it’s so good to still be doing it because of this event. It keeps you young! I feel great!

“It’s so good to be cycling in Bushy Park, it’s  so beautiful. I love looking at the deer and smelling the scent of the Lime tree blossom,” said 94 year old Shirley.

“It makes you feel wonderful! Cycling at our age, and in this gorgeous park. I can’t tell you how great it feels!” said 94 year old Eleanor. For Pam, who is 91,
it was her first visit to Bushy Park for ten years. “I used to come into the park regularly, but I’ve found it more difficult in recent years. It’s fantastic to be back and cycling too!”

Companion Cycling charity founder Judy Cobbett said: “It’s a joy to see them all enjoying themselves so much and we are so pleased we are able to help. Our special bikes are perfect for them”

The group enjoyed a reviving cuppa afterwards in the Companion Cycling picnic area.

Care Group spokesperson Phil Wardman said: “It’s been an amazing afternoon – with two fantastic local charities.
“Thanks to Companion Cycling. It’s been so good for mental and physical health, but most of all they just have a huge laugh together.
“Thanks also to park manager Phil Edwards and the Bushy Park management team who are always so supportive of this event, and accessible cycling in the park. It wouldn’t be possible without their backing.”
