Creating a Balanced Life Without Sacrificing Success

The world seems to be moving fast and ever faster. The pace of life today is quicker than that of 10, or even 5, years ago – a function both of our own personal journeys through life and the speedy pace of technological innovation. Where we are now will, in future years, be recognised as another great shift in civilisation; for the moment, though, we can only find the strength to live through it day by day.

But not all of us do. The appetite for success is high, and for a variety of reasons (not in the least the ever-rising thresholds for home-ownership and family affordability) – but to succeed is to work, and to work hard. This requires a delicate balancing act, between putting the effort in professionally and giving yourself the personal time you so desperately need. Achieving the perfect work-life balance is most certainly not easy, but that doesn’t make it any less essential for maintaining both productivity and personal wellbeing.

This is the topic of our guide today. Your life needs balance, otherwise burnout is guaranteed. But you don’t need to make sweeping changes in order to improve your wellbeing, nor do you need to sacrifice success in the process. By making small, intentional changes to your daily routine, you can create a healthier balance between your professional responsibilities and the time you dedicate to yourself and your family.

Set Clear Boundaries

The key, really, is boundaries. For many of us, particularly those of us running a side hustle, it’s difficult to delineate when working time stops and leisure time starts. It’s also easy to bargain with ourselves to answer just one more email, chase one more client. Interrupt this by defining specific working hours, and sticking to them whenever possible. Creating firm lines you do not cross, wherein you never check emails or take work calls outside certain working hours, is crucial to ensuring your personal time remains protected.

Take Meaningful Breaks and Holidays (client link here)

Defining when work stops and life begins is a great start, but it doesn’t address the high stress levels that naturally result from giving so much time to working in the first place. We need regular breaks, in order to better regulate ourselves; they help prevent burnout, and even improve productivity accordingly. All-inclusive holidays are great choices for fully switching off on holiday; they enable you to devolve responsibility for most things to your travel provider, and spend more time recuperating with your family.

Prioritise What Matters Most

Time and task management are vital for success professionally; without these skills, progression is not easy. Apply these same skills to your work-life balance, and you’ll see similar returns with respect to your wellbeing. Put simply: not every task deserves the same level of attention. Do you need to work late to solve this problem, or can it wait until tomorrow? And is dinner with your family not more important?
