Record-breaking round the world sailor, author and campaigner Tracy Edwards MBE is urging people to sign the petition against Thames Water’s plans for a new sewage scheme near Teddington, we can reveal.

She said: “Thames Water are planning on getting approval to dump 75 million litres of semi-treated sewage in the river on a daily basis.

“This will destroy the area of river around Kingston/Teddington.

“I’d really appreciate it if you could all spend a minute signing this government petition.

“We need 100,000 signatures so every signature please is vital.

Tracy, 63 , told Teddington Town: “I have only been a Professional Ocean Racer for 46 years and in that short time I have seen our oceans and seas used as a toilet and rubbish dump.

“And now thanks to the water companies, our rivers are suffering the same fate.

“Anyone who has watched Dirty Business on Channel 4 will be as angry as I am that, despite the Government promising to put a stop to this wanton destruction of our waterways and wildlife, the water companies continue to do as they please as they rake in millions at the expense of our environment  and that of our children.

“Enough is enough – someone please put Feargal Sharkey in charge!”

A spokesperson for the locally-based campaigning group SOLAR (Save Our Lands and River) said: “We are delighted to have the support of such an influential and knowledgeable person as Tracy.
