POLICE OFFICER COMMANDEERS MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC’S BIKE TO CHASE SUSPECTED BIKE THIEF – WATCH DRAMATIC VIDEO
Dramatic bodycam footage has captured the moment a plucky police officer commandeered a member of the public’s bike to chase down and arrest a suspected bike thief.
The unnamed officer gave a running commentary as he abandoned his police car to jump on the bike and follow the bike thief along the pavement of the A316 and on to a gravel path past The Stoop rugby ground Twickenham stadium.
The quick-thinking officer can be heard asking the member of the public: “Can I chase him on this? I’ll only be five minutes. You’re a star.”
During his radio communications to colleagues he says: “I’ve commandeered a pedal cycle. I’m chasing him now – it’s going to be interesting.”
The officer catches up with the suspect orders him to pull over and pins him to the ground and informs him he is under arrest for the theft of a ‘pedal cycle.’
He tells him: “Get over, get over mate. You’re nicked. You’re under arrest for the theft of a pedal cycle. Put your hands behind your back. Do not resist.”
The thief is then handcuffed.
He then tells his colleagues he has to go to ‘repatriate’ the bike he had commandeered to the ‘hero’ member of the public.
The police said: “We know that bike theft is a real concern for people in your area, and it’s something we’re taking seriously.
“Tackling cycle theft remains a priority for us, and we’re working hard to catch offenders and keep our communities safe.
“The video below shows a recent arrest after a bike was stolen on Whitton High Street and is a great example of the public and police working together.
“In this case, a quick-thinking cyclist lent an officer their bike so they could continue their pursuit of a suspect. It’s a brilliant example of how a small act can make a big difference!”
