Hampton & Richmond Borough secured their second victory of the season over ten man Farnborough on matchday eight of the National League South.
Both sides were looking to bounce back from disappointing weekend results, with the visiting Yellows losing 4-0 to Tonbridge Angels and the Beavers losing 4-1 to AFC Totton.
The first midweek match of the season at the newly revamped Beveree Stadium started frantically as a result, with both sides determined to get back in the win column.
Despite the visitors striking the post and seeing a shot cleared off the line, it was HRBFC who struck first in the 12th minute through centre-back Ben Jackson for his first of the season.
Farnborough failed to clear their lines when a Max Kretzschmar delivery was sent into the box, and Jackson stabbed home a side-foot volley at the back post, leaving goalkeeper Luke Thomas with no chance.
The goal injected even more life into an already frantic game, with the front three of strikers Tobi Sho-Silva, Max Mullins and midfielder Kretzschmar combining well to create chances in the first half.
For one player the energy could not be channeled in a constructive manner, as right back Sam Okoye’s loose touch and subsequent reckless challenge saw him fly into youngster Hayden Barrett at some speed.
There were few complaints as he received his marching orders.
For the remaining fifteen minutes of the first half the home side looked to settle proceedings early, but a combination of stubborn defending from Farnborough and some poor finishing meant the Beavers went into the break just the one goal to the good.
Farnborough, although hindered by the man disadvantage did not give up hope and started the second half much the better side, looking the far more likely side to strike next in TW12.
However, Hampton & Richmond Borough bided their time and saw out what seemed to be Farnborough’s final spell of dominance.
Kretzschmar should have scored in the 57th and the ball was in the back of the net ten minutes later, this time only halted by the linesman’s flag.
The half-time introduction of the exciting Somali international Sak Hassan on the left wing helped the Beavers pin back the Yellows, with Hassan creating chance after chance.
After two spurned chances the number seven finally got his assist and his team’s second in the 78th minute when fellow substitute jasper Mather lashed home his low cross with an excellent first-time finish into the top left corner.
With the lead doubled the Beveree faithful could breathe easier for the final ten minutes and were in fine voice to serenade their side for securing their second three points of the young campaign, and their first clean sheet.
Hampton & Richmond Borough Return to Beveree Stadium Saturday September 12th at 3pm when they take on 16th-placed Chelmsford City.
