Richmond Council calls on TfL to address “unacceptable level of disruption” on A316
Richmond Council’s Transport Lead, Councillor Alexander Ehmann, has assured residents and businesses that the Council is doing everything it can to push Transport for London (TfL) to address significant traffic issues as a result of their A316 corridor roadworks.
He has said:
“We know these works are causing major problems that are impacting many people, and not just those living and working in the area – this is a major TfL red route connecting west London to the M3. As in this instance TfL are both the traffic authority and delivering the project, the Council has no control over the works, but we do have a responsibility to put pressure on TfL to make sure the work is done as well as possible. It is clear the current situation cannot go on.
“TfL’s works include essential waterproofing maintenance of the rail bridge under the Manor Circus roundabout, to ensure its safety. This work is being combined with highways improvements to minimise the impact of doing the two sets of work separately. While the Council is supportive of the works, they are causing an unacceptable level of disruption which needs to be dealt with urgently if the current traffic management is expected to be in place for the rest of this year.
“Councillors and officers have already met with TfL on site to show them the issues and implore them to consider a number of measures that we think could help. We await the swift outcome of their deliberations this week and will provide a further update as soon as we have it.”
The Council has asked TfL to consider:
- Extending working hours to complete works sooner
- Improving traffic light phasing
- Managing the traffic flow by reducing the number of routes coming into the roundabout, along with suitable diversions
- Increasing signage as far as the M25 to divert those travelling towards central London via other routes, and further in towards central London to redirect those leaving the city
- Amending bus services to better meet local public transport demand
The Council will be hosting an online public meeting for anyone impacted by this issue on Thursday 28th September. TfL have been invited to attend to discuss both the response to our proposals and other solutions that may alleviate issues. Find out more and register here.
Cllr Ehmann added:
“We know delays like this are painful, whether you are trying to get home or to work, drop your children at school or access local businesses and amenities. We are also aware of the impact heavy traffic is having on air quality. If you must travel by car through this area, please consider turning your engine off while stationary and help us protect the health of those living in the area.”

Richmond upon Thames residents who have issues accessing the Townmead Road Recycling Centre as a result of the heavy traffic are welcome to visit Space Waye in Feltham. Booking is essential and you will need to bring proof of residency (photo ID, utility bill). Richmond residents cannot visit Space Waye with a trailer or van and there may be charges for DIY waste.
