Gail’s, the famous bakery and cafe chain is setting up shop in Broad Street, Teddington, we can exclusively reveal.

The famous cafe, which  has 100 shops mostly in London including Twickenham, Richmond and Kingston, is set to move into the spacious premises briefly occupied by Planet Organic before it went into administration. The store was previously Johnson Shoes.

The announcement has taken the community by surprise given the number of cafes and bakers in Broad Street and High Street including two branches of Cavan Bakery.

Eye-catching signage in the brand’s familiar red lettering has appeared in the windows of the former Planet Organic shop saying: “HELLO TEDDINGTON. WE’LL BE BAKING HERE SOON.”

There is also a QR code offering ” A LITTLE TREAT ON US” and urging passers-by to download the Gail’s loyalty app and get a free drink.

The shop is also likely to offer job opportunities with another sign asking: “ARE YOU THE MISSING INGREDIENT? JOIN OUR TEAM.”  An email address says: “jobs.gailsbread.co.uk.”

Gail’s has become famous for its bread, pastries and cakes as well as lunches and breakfasts and will bring new competition to established Teddington businesses like Cafe Nero, Woof Cafe, Costa Coffee, Cafe Mimmo and the popular Gosia’s Cafe and Deli in Broad Street as well as Cafe Benedict, Parsnips, The Coffee Mill, Local Hero, Islay, Starbucks and the Fallow Deer and Girasole in the High Street.

Their website states: “We believe in making good bread. As we’ve grown, so has our menu and our community, yet our values have stayed the same.

“We take the time to make our bread, pastries, cakes, breakfasts and lunches as we always have – with care, by hand and according to the season – so that we don’t need to compromise on what we eat, whether we’re on the go, or taking time out in one of our bakeries.

“Everyone is welcome in our bakeries. We believe in the power of community, in helping those around us and living as sustainably as possible.

“We insist on the finest ingredients, supporting small businesses wherever we can, and though we’re always innovating, our baking is based on time-honoured techniques and our decades-old starters.

“Nothing gives us as much pleasure as a freshly baked, lovingly crafted loaf.

“We bake by hand with natural ingredients, and whilst we are ordinary people, we want to make extraordinary things. We want to play our part to bring humanity back into the food world, and back to local communities. We can’t imagine doing anything more gratifying than baking our, and your, bread.”
